Respectful Care

Providing respectful, equitable and supportive care to every patient is a core part of the MDPQC’s work. Patients should be included as respected members of and contributors to the multidisciplinary care team and as participants in patient-centered huddles and debriefs to ensure:

  • An establishment of trust.

  • Informed, bidirectional shared decision-making is cultivated.

  • Patient values and goals are the primary driver of this process.

Open, transparent and empathetic communication with pregnant and postpartum people and their identified support network provides an opportunity for everyone to engage in discussions to understand diagnoses, options and treatment plans.

Additionally, care teams are encouraged to recognize that patient support networks may include nonfamilial supports, such as doulas and home visitors, who, with the patient’s permission, should be welcome when any teaching or planning is provided.
